NIEPOORT VINHOS SA

Niepoort is an independent family business since 1842. Through five generations the business passed successfully from one Niepoort to the next and in most cases older and younger generation worked side by side for a long period.

Niepoort has always been known as a small, high quality port lodge in Vila Nova. However when in 1987 Dirk joined his father Rolf in the family business things changed. Soon they acquired two Quintas in the Douro, Nápoles and Carril, and in 1990 began making table wines: Robustus, in 1990 was experimental, and from 1991 it has been remade to Redoma. Gradually other wines were added to Redoma Tinto, including the more affordable Vertente.

Dirk has created more stunning wines than might be thought possible in several oenological lifetimes. Beginning with the massively surly and delinquent Robustus in 1990, whose metamorphosis over more than ten years, from ugly duckling into graceful swan, stunned the wine world, not to mention his skeptical father Rolf. Untrained, and therefore uninhibited, he has put the Douro back at the vanguard of fabulous fine wine.

Since Dirk took the reins, Niepoort has been recognised as one of the truly great creators of the best Port wine, the designer behind the very finest red and white table wines of the Douro and a global ambassador for Portugal. His combination of attention to detail, a creative mind and fearsome dedication to industry are legendary. As result of this hard work and enterprise the Niepoort winery has been showered with accolades – making the wines increasingly scarce. In 2008 they have been nominated as Winery of the Year by Wine & Spirit Magazine and European Winemaker of the Year by US Magazine Wine Enthusiast. Voted as One of the 50 most influential winemakers in the world Dirk is one of the most popular figures in the wine trade today.

Similarly to the wines the ports are also vinified traditionally at Niepoort. Modern techniques and equipment are used where necessary and with great care not to mask or alter the original character of the wine. At Niepoort they believe, that replanting old vineyards with world-wide known varieties could not be a good decision. In that way they would need to compete with big New World wineries that would have an advantage of more than 10 years experience in making wine. Therefore they vinify traditional indigenous varieties in a traditional manner, foot treading them instead of using pneumatic presses, etc.

Apart from sensational table wines, they have for a long time been producers of excellent ports. They are well known for fine vintage ports and excellent tawnies and colheitas.

“Niepoort is to vintage port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by big competitors, but they are producing outstanding wines that very few can match”
